Robert Longo Retrospective

I first became familiar with Robert Longo’s work when watching Marry Harron’s American Psycho. The New York-based artist first became known in the ’80s with his ‘Men in the Cities’ series depicting contorted business men and women in black suits over a white backdrop. (Two pieces from this series can be seen in the film hanging on the wall in Patrick Bateman’s apartment.) In his career covering nearly three decades, the artist has amassed quite a hefty amount of work, and has had retrospectives in several cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Tokyo. Currently, the MAMAC in Nice is holding a retrospective of his art spanning a twenty-year period. Works include photography, charcoal on paper, sculpture and more.

A year ago, we got a first look at the Doughboy New Era by Benny Gold, and then a couple months later he hit us off with new colourways. The San Francisco-based graphic artist/designer is getting set to release the popular fitted in three new colourways as part of his upcoming Fall/Winter collection. They also feature a new buffalo plaid liner that mirrors the flight patterns of a paper airplane, while the black hat is satin lined, and the khaki material is the same feel as a new pair of creased Dickies. No doubt these too will go fast. Hit up your local BG retailer to have them put your size on hold. mash rating: 7/10

Another brand coming out of the Acapulco Gold camp is Instant Winner. Here we get a look at their Car Crash Series decks. BBC/Ice Cream’s car crash tees instantly come to mind, but Instant Winner went a “step further” and drew a chick in a bikini posing in front of the ride. The set consists of four decks, all of which can be ordered through Run My Game. mash rating: 4/10

Photographer/graffit artist, Ruedione spent six years from 2002 until 2008 taking photographs of fellow graffiti writers at night. His new book, Backflashes: Graffiti Tales aims at visualizing the feeling writers get when venturing out into the night to carry out their art. The book also features quotes from several other artists from around the world to show that this feeling is lived and celebrated by an international community. To read more about the book and Ruedione, check out an interview I Love Graffiti did with him recently.
