Sports Story: USA Advances in World Cup, but Americans Care More About College Athletes

Turn on ESPN today in America and you would have heard John Wall mentioned more than Donovan. It’s a shame, but even if Americans win the cup the talk will just be, “We won in a sport we don’t even care about, ahh America!” Then at some point three hot dogs and two hamburgers will be eaten as a breakfast appetizer, while the channel flips from Fox Soccer Network to NBA TV for more pre-draft coverage; that’s right, talks about athletes who have never played a professional game.

San Francisco-based Alex Varanese’s new project, ALT/1977 shows us what everyday objects from today would like if advertised back in 1977.

“What would you do if you could travel back in time? Assassinate Marilyn Monroe? Go on a date with Hitler? Obviously. But here’s what I’d do after that: grab all the modern technology I could find, take it to the late 70’s, superficially redesign it all to blend in, start a consumer electronics company to unleash it upon the world, then sit back as I rake in billions, trillions, or even millions of dollars.”

Digital Daily: Bassoforte

At mash we are all about new, innovative ways to do the same thing people have been doing for years, whether it be t-shirts, posing – sexy ladies, or music. Here, we see DIY-er Diego Stocco make one of the sickest instruments ever seen and then make it midi, nice.

“Few days ago I started thinking about how I could re-purpose the keyboard of the dismantled piano I keep in the garden,  so I thought to build a new instrument by combining it with some other parts I had laying around. I ended up with this mechanical hybrid thing I thought to call “Bassoforte” (bass + pianoforte).”

Nor can they win, as the French National team is officially out of the world cup. After losing 2-1 to South Africa, France acted very low-class and showed no sportsmanship when coach Raymond Domenech refused to shake the hand of his opposite. A sad day for France indeed.
