Stanley Kubrick’s New York Subway Photos

Back in November, we shared several images from Stanley Kubrick taken in 1940s New York, while he was working as a photojournalist for Look magazine. From that same era we now bring you some candid shots taken inside NYC’s subway system of often times unsuspecting passengers.
Preceding Kubrick’s subway portraits was Walker Evans who, in 1938, also shot many great images in New York subways with a camera hidden in his coat. This may have influenced Kubrick’s work as some of his portraits were also shot from the hip, in the same fashion as Walker Evans.
More after the jump.
