Walter Looss Jr. is said to be the foremost sports photographer of his generation and a fixture in American journalism. For years he worked for Sports Illustrated documenting the best in the game including the likes of Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, and Ken Griffey Jr., but apart from professional athletes, he also captured sports fans and kids playing in the street. According to him, “The real joy of photography is these moments. I’m always looking for freedom, the search for the one-on-one. That’s when your instincts come out.”

Take a look at some of his work after the jump.
