Alan Spearman is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and photojournalist. His recent project, As I Am tells the story of Chris Dean, someone whose heart stopped when he was two. He died but he came back. When Chris was five, his father was murdered, riddled by more than 20 bullets in a gang shootout. For eight weeks, Spearman walked the streets of South Memphis with Dean observing and recording what became the script of As I Am, a fourteen-minute film that floats through this remarkable young man’s landscape, revealing the lives that have shaped his world. Poetic and powerful imagery, captured by Spearman and cinematographer Mark Adams, combines with the young philosopher’s trenchant observations about life.

Bones Brigade: An Autobiography (Trailer)

August 22nd, 2012  •   Posted by: mark  •   Posted in: film, skateboarding, video  •   1 Comment

Steve Caballero, Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen and Lance Mountain. Just a few legendary members of the original Bones Brigade team. Thanks to Stacey Peralta, and his new documentary full of archive footage and commentary from the original members, we’ll soon get a comprehensive look at the team that dominated skateboarding in the ’80s. Here’s the first official trailer.

“Unmotivated by fame or popularity, they completely dedicated their lives to a disrespected art form. For most of the 1980s, this misfit crew headed by a 1970s ex-skateboard champion blasted the industry with a mixture of art and raw talent becoming the most popular skateboarding team in history. The core unit of the Bones Brigade built an empire that covered the world. They dominated contests, made hundreds of thousands of dollars, created the modern skateboard video, reinvented endemic advertising, pushed skate progression into a new era, and set the stage for a totally new form of skating called street style. There’s nothing comparable in today’s skateboarding.”
